What is Leadville like in winter?
Short answer: real high-altitude winter in a town that stays open and gets quiet. January runs to average highs of 31 F and average lows of 3 F, snow is possible from early fall well into May, and the two year-round highway passes stay plowed but demand respect. The skiing splits three ways: Ski Cooper and the Tennessee Pass Nordic Center share the summit of Tennessee Pass ten miles north of town, and the Mineral Belt Trail loops the town itself, groomed and free. The drive up is the part to plan around, not the town.
How cold it actually gets
The 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Leadville put January at a 31.1 F average high and a 3.1 F average low, and the shoulder months are not soft: nights freeze most of the year at this elevation. Cold snaps run well below zero overnight. The number that matters for anyone doing something outside is the combination: the air at 10,152 ft already carries about a third less effective oxygen than sea level, and hard effort in deep cold compounds how that feels. When the freeze and the first snow arrive, 2010 to 2025
Short answer: the first 32 F night in town lands in the second week of September in a typical year (median Sep 12, range Aug 25 to Sep 23), the first 28 F hard freeze around Sep 24, and the first measurable snow around Sep 22. The first inch of snow has a median of Oct 4, and the first day the town never thaws, a daily high at or below 32 F, has a median of Oct 26. Thirteen of the 16 years had frozen by September 15.
These are model dates, not station observations, from the same archive record behind the race-weekend history: the Leadville town grid point at a model elevation of 10,164 ft, ERA5 reanalysis through 2016 and the ECMWF IFS 9 km analysis from 2017 on, searched from August 1 each year. A grid cell smooths the cold-air pooling that makes the valley floor colder than the surrounding slopes, so the airport station will often show a freeze a few nights earlier than these dates. Use them for the shape of the season, not for a specific night.

Snowfall is the model's daily snowfall total at the town point, at thresholds of 0.1 in and 1 in; the September 8, 2020 storm shows up in every column of that row, which is a useful check on the record. Freeze dates are the first daily minimum at or below each threshold on or after August 1; a freeze in late July, which happens here, would not appear. When the snowpack starts at Fremont Pass, 2010 to 2025
Short answer: the first snow water of the season registers on the Fremont Pass snow pillow around Oct 5 in a typical year (Sep 8 to Oct 22), but it usually melts off again. The date snow starts staying, meaning the first day that begins two unbroken weeks with snow water on the ground, has a median of Oct 12, and the first inch of snow water a median of Oct 26. In 9 of the 16 autumns the first snow melted off before the snowpack started, with a median gap of 9.5 days and a longest gap of 41 days in 2020.
This is measured data rather than model data, which makes it the counterpart to the town first-freeze table above: USDA NRCS Air and Water Database, daily snow water equivalent (WTEQ) for station 485:CO:SNTL, at 11,310 ft. A snow pillow weighs the water in the snow sitting on it, so a tenth of an inch of water is a real reading of a thin or wet layer, not an estimate of depth.
This season: The pillow read 0.1 in on Sep 14, zero again on Sep 15, then 0.1 in on Sep 16 and Sep 17. Sep 14 is the season's first snow water: 21 days ahead of the 2010 to 2025 median of Oct 5, and the second earliest in these 17 autumns behind Sep 8, 2020. No inch and no sustained run yet. The station's snow depth sensor still reads 0 in.

Definitions, because these three columns answer different questions. First snow water: First day from August 1 onward with snow water equivalent above zero on the pillow. Snow that stays: First day that begins a run of 14 consecutive days with snow water equivalent above zero, which is the closest thing in this record to the date the snowpack starts rather than a storm passing through. First inch: First day with snow water equivalent at or above 1 in. Limits: A snow pillow measures the water in the snow above it, not snow depth, and a tenth of an inch of water can appear and melt off inside a day. Fremont Pass is 11,310 ft and about 11 miles north of Leadville, so it is not the town and not the Sawatch summits. NRCS publishes its own median first snow water of Oct 12 for this station computed over the full record since 1979, which is a different window than the 2010 to 2025 one used here; both numbers are correct for what they measure. The honest caveat on the Mineral Belt: grooming depends entirely on snow cover, and in thin years it stops early, as it did in the low-snow 2025-26 season. The grooming report shows what has actually been groomed and when, which is worth thirty seconds before you drive over with skate skis.
Backcountry, ice and the closed roads
The high country around Leadville is serious backcountry in winter, and this site does not teach avalanche craft. Anyone touring here reads the CAIC forecast for the Sawatch zone daily, carries and knows rescue gear, and gets formal avalanche education from the people who teach it. The summer driving routes change character completely: Mosquito Pass closes with the snow, Hagerman Pass is a snow route, and Independence Pass (CO 82) closes for the season each fall and stays closed until late spring, so Aspen goes back to being four hours away instead of ninety minutes.
Turquoise Lake freezes most winters and sees regular ice fishing. No agency measures or certifies ice thickness here; that judgment and the risk are entirely yours, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife regulations apply as they do all year. Road access matters more than usual right now: Turquoise Lake Road (County Road 4) has been closed from the Abe Lee turnoff to Hagerman Pass since April 2026, so check the notices board for current access before planning on the west side of the lake.
The drive is the crux
Both year-round approaches, CO 91 over Fremont Pass and US 24 over Tennessee Pass, are plowed state highways that take real weather at 10,400 to 11,300 ft. Colorado's passenger vehicle Traction Law runs every year from September 1 through May 31 on the I-70 mountain corridor, which includes the stretch most Leadville traffic uses to reach Copper Mountain, and CDOT activates it on other highways whenever conditions warrant. What it requires: 4WD or AWD, or winter, all-weather or mud-and-snow rated tires, all with at least 3/16 inch of tread, or chains or an approved alternative traction device. In severe storms the passenger vehicle Chain Law is the final step before a closure, and then every vehicle needs chains or a traction device, 4WD included. Noncompliance is a fine; being the car that blocks the pass is a worse afternoon than the fine. The town in winter
Leadville does not close. The businesses on Harrison Avenue run through the winter, lodging is easier to get and generally cheaper than in the race months, and the town is at its most itself: quiet streets, woodsmoke, and the kind of cold that makes the historic district make sense. Winter has its own event calendar, headlined by the skijoring races that turn Harrison Avenue into a snow track behind galloping horses, typically in early March; dates are set locally each year, so verify before building a trip around them. What this site does all winter
