Where should you stay in Leadville?
Short answer: if you're coming for a race weekend, book by May or plan to commute. Leadville is a town of about 2,500 people with a limited bed count, and the summer race series more than doubles the population on peak weekends. In town you'll choose between historic hotels, a well-known hostel, and a large pool of cabins and vacation rentals. Outside town, Twin Lakes (20 min), Copper Mountain (25 min), Frisco (30 min) and Buena Vista (40 min) absorb the overflow, usually at better prices but with a morning drive.
The lay of the land
Leadville's lodging splits into four rough categories. Historic hotels, most famously the Delaware Hotel on Harrison Avenue, put you in a Victorian building in the middle of town, walkable to everything. The hostel option, Inn the Clouds Hostel & Inn, offers dorm beds and private rooms with a shared kitchen and is the standard budget pick for solo racers and small crews. Vacation rentals are the biggest slice of inventory: cabins, Victorian houses and multi-bedroom homes, many with full kitchens, which matters more than usual up here because cooking for a crew at 10,152 ft beats hunting for a table on a packed race weekend. Local managers such as Traverse Hospitality run dozens of these properties, alongside the usual Airbnb and Vrbo listings. Camping and RV options ring the town: developed sites around Turquoise Lake, dispersed camping on surrounding national forest, and commercial RV parks; summer weekends fill early, and nights routinely drop into the 30s°F even in August.

Two things people underestimate: first, sleeping lower is a real acclimatization tool, so Buena Vista's 7,965 ft is a feature, not a compromise, if altitude worries you (see the altitude guide). Second, check the road status before relying on a quick morning drive; summer construction on US 24 and winter conditions on the passes can stretch these times badly.
Race weekends change everything
On Leadville Race Series weekends, everything in town, plus most of Twin Lakes and a good share of Frisco and Copper, is booked months out. The practical calendar: lottery results land in winter, the organized racers book immediately, and by May the in-town options are largely gone. Groups have one more lever: a single large rental house in town, split six ways, often beats six hotel rooms in Frisco on both cost and race-morning logistics.
Questions worth asking before you book
Does the property have a full kitchen, and how far is it from the race start or your crew route? Is parking off-street (race weekends bring parking restrictions on some streets)? Is there a minimum-night requirement (three nights is common on race weekends)? And if you're sensitive to altitude, is it worth trading convenience for 2,000 ft of sleeping elevation down valley?
